Clues To Go

Scotland - Edinburgh

We  have a set of walking routes in Edinburgh & nearby, in South Queensferry.

The Royal Mile in Edinburgh is so packed with fascinating historic buildings, memorials, follies, not to mention the yards, courtyards & closes that lead off it, that we now have four walking routes there, all totally different. In addition we have added another walking route in nearby South Queensferry, if you want to get out of 'Auld Reekie'.

See bottom of page for details of how to order Clues To Go routes.

Edina! Scotia's darling seat!

All hail thy palaces and tow'rs,

Where once, beneath a Monarch's feet,

Sat Legislation's sov'reign pow'rs:

From marking wildly scatt'red flow'rs,

As on the banks of Ayr I stray'd,

And singing, lone, the lingering hours,

I shelter in they honour'd shade

Route Location

Edinburgh's Royal Mile, from the Castle to Holyrood

A downhill stroll from the castle esplanade, along Lawnmarket, past St. Giles Cathedral, along the High Street & Cannongate, to finish up in front of the new Scottish parliament buildings in Holyrood.

Edinburgh's Royal Mile, from the Castle to World's End

A shorter version of the above walk, finishing 2/3rds of the way down the Royal Mile at St Mary's Street. The questions, however, relate to totally different features from the Holyrood walk - so the two routes are totally independant of each other.

Less than one royal mile (about 2 hours)

  Edinburgh, Royal Mile Picture Quiz

Another stroll down Castlehill, along Lawnmarket, past St. Giles Cathedral, along the High Street & Cannongate, finishing close to the new Scottish parliament buildings in Holyrood. This route is different in that all the questions include a picture of a feature to identify along the way, together with a simple question about it when you find it. A good route for younger families but also fun for everyone else.

Approx one royal mile (about 2 hours)

  Edinburgh's Royal Mile - Cryptic

A slightly shorter route than the others, starting at Bank Street rather than at the top of the Royal Mile, but still finishing at the Parliament buildings in Holyrood. However, half the questions are rather more cryptic and not just observational.

A shorter royal mile (about 2 hours)

  South Queensferry

A great location for a short Clues To Go walking route, with views on the way of the Firth of Forth & the two famous bridges that cross it. There's much more than intially meets the eye in this charming town that much of the world passes by ever since the building of the road bridge.
