Clues To Go    -     Plymouth Hoe & the Barbican

This walking route starts on the elevated headland that is Plymouth Hoe, locating the answers to the first set of questions amongst the memorials and features that can be found there. Then you descend towards the roadway that circles the Hoe and Citadel, finishing the walk down by the harbour and Barbican.

The Hoe is dominated by Smeaton Tower, the lighthouse which originally stood on Eddystone Rocks, 14 miles away, but was moved to the Hoe in 1884 when a new lighthouse replaced it on the Rocks.

Ample car parking can be found a few hundred metres north of the Hoe, between Royal Parade & the Crescent (follow signposts as you enter the city). If arriving by train, then the station is a short bus ride away from the Hoe, or a good 20-30 minute walk.

The Barbican  area includes the old harbour and features The Mayflower Steps, which are close to where the Pilgrim Fathers left England for the New World. Apart from a large number of pubs, restaurants and cafes, the Barbican is also the location for several guided ghost walks, if you are looking for something different to do in the evening. Alternatively you can explore the old port itself and its cobbled back streets, or visit the National Marine Aquarium.
